The Bad

  • Not true to size
  • Difficulty adjusting chin strap
  • Non-intuitive buckle system
THE VERDICT

The Giro Stellar MIPS had the most unique technology, where the entire outer shell of the helmet conformed to the tester’s head rather than just the inner shell and lining. Though the fit was extremely secure and comfortable compared to other helmets, the helmet did not run true to size and also had a chinstrap that was difficult to adjust on the fly.

FULL REVIEW

The Giro Stellar MIPS is a women’s specific ski and snowboard helmet that uses a multi-directional impact protection system (MIPS) for protection and Conform Fit Technology for a secure fit.

Comfort
The Giro Stellar MIPS was extremely comfortable with no pressure points for most users, but was not true to size for all. This helmet was unique because the integrated Conform Fit Technology tightens the entire two-piece shell rather than just the inner structure for a very comfortable fit.

Weight
Although heavier than some of the helmets tested, the Giro Stellar felt very sleek and comfortable. The style and weight also did not hinder movement. Overall, the helmet felt secure when tightened with the chinstrap and the Conform Fit Technology.

Breathability
The helmet has six vents, with four adjustable vents on the top and two non-adjustable vents on the back. The adjustable vents were easy to use with gloves on. The interior lining is breathable and fully removable, as are the ear pads.

Ease of Use
Both the goggle strap and the Conform Fit Technology were easy to use with and without gloves. The chinstrap adjustment was a little harder to use than other helmets tested. A variety of goggles fit well with no gap. The helmet scuffed easily after a few uses. Adding audio chips was simple and easy.

Features
The Stellar MIPS comes with a goggle holder and is audio compatible. The helmet also comes with an integrated POV camera mount and a magnetic buckle system for easy, one-handed on and off, which did take some getting used to. The Giro Stellar uses MIPS technology—multi-directional impact protection system to protect heads from linear and rotational impacts. It is also made from durable EPP construction to protect against multiple impacts.
