As more and more outdoor gadgets adopt rechargeable batteries, keeping them all powered up while in the backcountry becomes more of a challenge too. These days it is not uncommon to head out into the field with headlamps, GPS devices, digital cameras, smartphones, and a host of other devices that require regular recharging to remain functional. USB battery packs are a good solution to this challenge of course, but not all of them are built to survive in the rough and tumble outdoor world. But the new Venture 70 from Goal Zero is not only incredibly tough, but it comes equipped with a high-capacity battery that can keep your electronic devices powered up no matter where you go.
Sporting a 17,700 mAh battery, the Venture 70 has the capacity to recharge most smartphones five or six times – or a 7” tablets twice – before it needs a recharge of its own. It comes equipped with two USB ports, each of which can provide as much as 2.4 amps of power, which basically means they can charge your device as fast as a wall outlet. Those same ports can also detect how much juice your gadgets can accept and adjust the output to avoid overcharging, something that can be harmful to electronics.
Goal Zero has a long history of creating power options for use in the outdoors and the Venture 70 is no exception. The battery pack is IPX67 certified, which essentially means that it is dust and waterproof, two qualities that come in handy when traveling or heading into the backcountry. Its durable case can take a beating too, although it comes at a price. The battery weighs 1 pound, which is pretty hefty if you’re looking to travel light.
We’ve been putting the Venture 70 to the test recently, and have found it to be an excellent option for keeping all of our devices charged while on the road. Sure, it’s a bit on the bulky side, but it’s also built like a tank and can survive just about anything you throw at it. Its large battery capacity means it can power all of our gear, even on extended trips, and since it was made by Goal Zero, it can be recharged via a solar panel while in the field.
Priced at $149.99, the Venture 70 is on the expensive side when compared to other battery packs, but considering its feature set and high level of durability, the price is warranted. It also happens to hold a lot of power, can recharge two devices at once, and is fast and efficient too. All of which are excellent qualities to have in a portable power source.
