THE VERDICT

The Arc’teryx Squamish Hoody wasn’t designed specifically for mountain biking but it fit the bill better than the other jackets in this test. It was the lightest jacket in the group and blended protection and breathability better than its competitors. The fit was a little more relaxed than riders in the test preferred but sizing down a notch offered a more athletic fit. Compressible fiber allowed for easy packing into a jersey pocket.

FULL REVIEW

Breathability
Arc’teryx’s trademark Tyono fabric minimized restrictiveness and maintained a consistent body temperature due to its fibers being just air permeable enough to breath without compromising integrity as a “wind breaker”.

Function
The Squamish did it’s job protecting testers from light rain and wind. Its water repellant construction protected inner layers and phones during wet rides and dried quickly as temperatures increased and the sun came out. Though wind resistant and featuring a cinch-bottom hem, this is not an ideal jacket for sub-50 degree temperatures. It is best used as a layer for temperatures ranging from 50 to 75 degrees. The helmet compatible StormHood with one-handed draw-cords was prone to billowing when not in use and could only be stowed by stuffing it in the collar. It was ergonomically functional while employed and it was unrestrictive with head movement. As with many of the jackets in the test, riders preferred more options for pockets beyond the one found on the chest. Hip pockets or a lumbar pocket would have enhanced overall function.

Fit/Comfort
The Arc’teryx Squamish Hoody ran a bit baggy to size. By sizing down, riders experienced a more trim fit while benefitting from the forgiving Tyono fabric, which elongates and contracts with ease. It excelled in wicking heat and sweat better than any in the test group and was best in class in regulating body heat. It’s the kind of jacket riders kept on even as the weather warmed.

Packability
A clear winner in the test, the Squamish Hoody packed into it’s own pocket and easily stowed in a jersey pocket taking no more space than the size of an orange. It quickly and instinctively unfurls from its packed state, which made for easy access in a sudden rain.

Durability
The Squamish Hoody is 100% nylon. The trademarked Tyono fabric is created by crimping the fibers, which allows for greater mobility and durability. The jacket responded well to punishment from branches, mist, mud, rain, and heavy use.

Blend: Tyono 30. 100% nylon
