Selecting the snacks that you take with you on your hike is almost as important as choosing the right boots. You want to pack something lightweight, convenient, and preferably healthy too. Of course, it goes without saying that it needs to be tasty, and it doesn’t hurt if you can throw it in your backpack and not worry if it will stay fresh while you’re on the trail either. These simple – but important – stipulations have led hikers towards energy bars and trail mixes like good old raisins and peanuts (aka GORP) over the years, making them a staple in nearly every daypack.
But now, a new subscription box service called Trailfoody is looking to make choosing the right snacks for our hikes easier than ever. Each month the company promises to send subscribers a box filled with trail-ready food that has been specifically curated for the needs of hikers. To that end, the company has partnered with some well known brands, including Epic Provisions, Justin’s, and Tanka to help deliver healthy, delicious, and easy to carry options for the outdoor enthusiasts needs.
When selecting items to place in the box each month, the team at Trailfoody looks for some important characteristics. For instance, they want to send subscribers options that will provide plenty of fuel to see them through their outdoor adventures. They’re also picking snacks that are healthy, avoiding most items that include artificial preservatives or genetically modified ingredients. Some are even completely organic too. Finally, the foods are also meant to stay fresh without the need to carry a cooler or refrigeration of any kind. Just throw these items in your pack, and off you go.
A typical Trailfoody monthly box is likely to contain an assortment of mixed nuts, dried fruits and meats, energy drinks, meal bars, and more. Just how much food you receive depends on the level of your subscription however. For example, the basic option – dubbed “The Wanderer” – is considered good for 1-2 outings, and offers the equivalent of one lunch on the trail, and 4 energy bars, at a cost of $21.95. Jumping up to “The Pathfinder” brings those numbers up to 3 trail lunches and 6 energy bars at a price of $43.95, while the highest level – “The Intrepid” – will set you back $53.95 but ships with 4 trail lunches and 8 energy bars each and every month.
Those prices seem a bit high, but as with most monthly subscription boxes, you’re paying for the convenience as much as the contents of the box itself. Make no mistake, the snacks that Trailfoody sends its customers each month are very high quality, and don’t come cheap. But, part of the allure of a service like this one is that you don’t have to think about what you’re going to pack. Before setting out on your hike you simply sift through the box, pick out the things you want, and head out the door. It doesn’t get any easier than that.
