Scarpa TRU Review
April 14, 2014The Good
- Good mix of lightweight and protection
- Responsive energetic ride
- Speedy
The Bad
- Ride may be a bit firm for some
- A little insecure in the upper (lack of overlays)
The Scarpa TRU are billed as trail race shoes, and certainly have a higher speed, efficient ride overall. They also have enough protection to work as everyday trainers on any terrain. It lacks the structure and stability for long runs in the mountains, but really impressed for shorter, faster runs.
The Scarpa TRU had a firm, responsive ride and aggressive treads, and the 6-mm drop makes for an aggressive ride on the compression molded EVA midsole. Considering this is designed to be a racing shoe, it doesn’t have as much support as others. However, what it lacks in support, it makes up for by weighing in at a light 8.2-oz for a size 42.
Security of Fit
The fit is medium throughout, but our team reported a secure feeling in the heel, thanks to small heel cushions and an overlay that can be snugged up for a more secure fit. The upper is highly breathable and doesn’t stretch, giving a little additional structure to the upper.
Comfort & Protection
With a forefoot strike plate, full-ground contact and reinforced toe, these have the support you want for setting off in the mountains, yet are pared down enough to be comfortable cruising on city trails.
Speed
I found these to be speed neutral—they’ll match what you deliver.
Agility & Traction
Lugs are small, but multi-directional for confident striding and the narrow profile makes quick turnover easy, if that’s your style.
Energy Efficiency
Energy return in these felt a little flat to me. The midsole cushion felt good under foot, but I could feel it compress at toe off.
Value
The TRU delivers mountain-running features (hello rock plate!) at a respectable $109 price. It’s an above average value.
