When Craig Dostie migrated west to ski California’s Sierra Nevada range in 1982 he was only thinking in terms of the slopes at Mammoth or Squaw Valley. Within a year, however, he had been bitten by the earn your turns bug of backcountry skiing. The infection was terminal and before the decade was over he had not only ditched alpine security for flimsy telemark gear, but a secure job in the electronics industry to produce Couloir, the first magazine devoted to backcountry skiing. As interest in skiing out of bounds grew, Craig saw the doors closing on the print media and merged Couloir with Backcountry magazine. He continues to share his enthusiasm and nearly 30 years experience climbing and skiing the mountains on EarnYourTurns.com.
