Black Diamond Vapor Point Pants ReviewMay 30, 2015
- Very lightweight
- Thigh venting
- Excellent breathability and waterproofness
- Loose waist
- No gaiter to keep out snow
The Vapor Point pants' streamlined design makes them best for touring or spring skiing. As one of Black Diamond’s lightest hardshell pants, they are made with Gore-Tex Active fabric, so they’re waterproof and highly breathable. The pants also have integrated RECCO and a Ladder-lock waist cinch system.
Quality of materials
Gore-Tex Active Fabric is very waterproof and highly breathable—all in a very lightweight package. The fabric is designed to allow vapor to move away from the skin, while blocking precip out, and these pants proved it—they performed well in both a deluge and a snowstorm.
The Vapor Point pants are loose fitting and comfortable. The waist runs a little big and I needed a belt for the most secure fit.
These are not the pants to pick for cold temps. Instead, they are the perfect pants for a spring day, a hut trip, or a ski tour.
The Vapor Point pants are the lightest pant I tested and are incredibly lightweight, breathable and packable. I also appreciated the streamlined silhouette and the thigh vents.
The Vapor Point pants fit loose and mountaineers can benefit from this lightweight layer. The cuffs aren’t too tight and fit fine over boots but the pants could use a gaiter to keep out snow. The Ladder-lock waist allows you to cinch the waist on one side. A note about fit: I wear women’s size M or 8 pants and have “child-bearing hips” and fairly long legs. Fit is highly personal and subjective—and extremely important with pants. It’s challenging to find ski pants that fit well in the butt (many are either too tight or saggy). I have tried to describe the fit to the best of my ability.
$299 is a good value for these high-performing, lightweight pants. Gore-Tex Active fabric lives up to the “active.”
