THE VERDICT

The Anker PowerPort Solar 21w is an excellent small-size portable solar charger that charges devices quickly. Though durability is only average when compared to competitors, it is still nonetheless an extremely rugged device. Overall: the Anker PowerPort Solar is a very good buy, and may perhaps be the best choice for USB powered devices that require 21 watts of power.

FULL REVIEW

Power Output
At 21w of total power, the Anker PowerPort offers one of the highest rated wattage outputs of any device we tested. In trials with our test smartphone, the Anker PowerPort Solar generated an average of 4.03 volts, and charged 1% of our test smartphone every 1 minute and 37 seconds.

Power/Size Ratio
The Anker PowerPort 21w falls in the middle range of size for devices tested, with a 150 square inches of solar cells divided into three 5” x 10” panels. In terms power delivered per square inch, however, the PowerPort 21w is quite good, earning a Gear Institute power/size ratio score of 4.12 — enough for third place, and handily outperforming all other competitors except for the Renogy E-FLEX 14w and the ChoeTech Foldable 19w.

Durability
The Anker PowerPort 21w panels are built from durable polymer substrate and held together with a rugged synthetic canvas. Overall durability is quite good: the canvas case is extremely durable, and the panels themselves withstood impact strikes from a hammer of approximately 15 and 30 pounds force with only cosmetic damage, and without serious impairment. The panels can also withstand a considerable amount of torsion, but appear to stress beyond approximately 90 degrees of twisting. Though the PowerPort’s overall durability is excellent, it is still however only average when compared to competitors.

Features
Like many competitors, the Anker PowerPort Solar 21w is a no-frills portable solar charger, offering two 2.4A USB charging ports, a micro USB charging cable, and an integrated velcro pouch for small storage.

Value
The Anker PowerPort Solar 21w is a very good value and outstanding buy, providing high wattage output, and fast charging times in a relatively small size for only $57.99.
