It’s not very often that you see a product that makes worlds (and seasons) collide. Until now snowboarders had to settle for skateboards in the summer until the days get shorter and the white powder starts to fall from the sky. The folks at Future Motion have found a way to change that reality with their Onewheel XR (extended range). The Onewheel XR combines the smooth ride of snowboarding with the versatility to rock out on trails and urban jungles alike. It can go where skateboards could not, but offers a much smoother ride than any mountain bike. Make no mistake, the Onewheel XR is a true all terrain boarding beast but also works great for just cruising around town to run errands.
There’s no remote to control your speed so your hands are completely free. Everything is done by leaning forward to go faster or backward to slow down, stop, or go in reverse. The Onewheel will do the rest. Not to get all technical, but located inside the Onewheel is a complex set of gyros and accelerometers that measure the board’s position 14,000 times per second like the proprioceptors of a fine tuned elite athlete. All of that information is interpreted by a computer chip in the HyperCore motor to adjust the ride to make it smoother or faster to your liking. In case that isn’t enough geeking out, you can also control your ride mode via the Onewheel app. On this app you can log all of your rides, connect with other Onewheel riders, and even see the details from other rides from around the world.
So what’s the catch? The Onewheel XR comes with a hefty price tag of $1,800. If that’s doesn’t suit your budget, you can go for the Onewheel (without the XR) for $1,400 that has a 5-7 mile range versus the 12-18 mile range of the Onewheel XR. Both have a maximum speed of 19 mph with recharge times of 30-minutes and 100-minutes between the Onewheel and the Onewheel XR, respectively. Regardless of which model suits your needs, Onewheel is changing the face of board sports for good while giving its riders the purest riding experience possible.
