The Bad
- Heavier than expected on the market
The Trango Smooth is a high performance quickdraw that uses keylock carabiners with tapered noses to prevent snagging on hangers and harnesses. The wide, tapered nylon dogbone runners are stitched tightly to keep the rope end carabiner in place and make it easy to grab a draw when working a sport route or making an emergency clip.
The Trango Smooth is a simply built, high performance quickdraw that has excellent clipping action and great handling. It features two keylock carabiners paired with a wide, tapered nylon dogbone runner.
Carabiners
The Smooth carabiners are full size keylock carabiners that have responsive gate action and clip easily. The Smooth quickdraw was a favorite of testers for their easy handling and great clipping. The keylock noses are tapered with a sleek profile that makes cleaning steep routes easier or prevents snags when pulling them off a cluttered harness. The carabiners are sleek and rounded, with a smooth feel as the name implies. Hence, testers enjoyed the feel and handling offered by the Smooth quickdraws and enjoyed the wide gate opening that is similar to other high end quickdraws such as the Petzl Ange or Black Diamond LiveWire.
Dogbone Runners
The nylon dogbone runner is wide to make it easier to grab when “dogging” a sport route or making a desperate clip. The 5” long nylon draw is 1” wide in the middle but tapered at the ends to help keep carabiners in place. The top of the runner is stitched loosely to allow movement of the top carabiner while the bottom of the runner is stitched tightly to keep the rope end carabiner in place to ease in clipping. During testing the rope end carabiner never moved out of place. The runner lacks a rubber retainer similar to other high end quickdraws on the market today but many will appreciate a runner that does the job to keep the carabiner in place while not having to worry about the durability of a rubber retainer that might break with use.
Versions
The Trango Smooth is available in three variations; a wire gate and wire gate combo, a straight and bent gate option and a straight and wire gate version. The wire/wire combo makes the Trango Smooth similar in weight to the Petzl Ange. At 3.5 ounces, the Trango Smooth in the straight/bent gate version is similar to many beefy sport draws and lighter than other similar draws tested such as the Black Diamond LiveWire or Cypher Cicada. The Smooth is heavier than the lightest quickdraws on the market and is best suited for people looking for a high performance quickdraw for climbing single pitch sport.
Value
Overall, the Smooth is a great value for people looking for a beefy sport climbing quickdraw. It was a favorite of many testers because of its great handling and ease of clipping and at $22.95 per draw, it is cheaper than many other high end quickdraws tested.
