Rab MeCo 250 Midweight
GEAR INSTITUTE RATINGS

The Good

  • Wicking and dry times.
  • Long zipper for venting.
  • Soft on skin.
  • High snug collar.
  • Small thumb slots that hold your sleeves tight.
  • Non-stink.

The Bad

  • Front key or phone pocket would be a bonus for this mid-weight layer, which I often found myself wearing as an outer layer.
THE VERDICT

The Rab MeCo 250 could be a near-perfect midweight baselayer with not only great technical dry time and wicking properties, but also great features and versatility.

FULL REVIEW

In such a competitive market of great Merino options, the Rab MeCo 250 struck me as one of the best we tested. From the softness of the wool blended with Cocona, to the high snug collar and the smaller thumb slots in the sleeves that offered extra palm protection, so many of the features were spot on.

Wicking
The chest zipper length is one of the longest in the test group allowing for better ventilation if needed. But the best benefits are found in the wicking performance, where Cocona blended with Merino seemed to enhance dry times and moisture spread in our lab tests. The only aspect I felt missing was when I found myself wearing this as my only layer on warm to cool days, when a zipped pocket would have added to its swankiness.

Performance
The midweight layer seemed to have just the right amount of thickness to be worn as a midlayer on very cold days, or as a baselayer in cool to warm conditions. Its longer length also prevented it from sliding up on frame during sports that required extension.
