Ortovox S1 ReviewMarch 17, 2012
GEAR INSTITUTE RATINGS
- Recognizes multiple victims.
- Superb marking.
- Grid-like visual display.
- Easy to use.
- Long range.
- Gets confused w/more than 2 signals—slows searching.
While Ortovox's S1 is arguably the most sophisticated avalanche transceiver available, with a solid 48 meters of range and the best marking function of any beacon around, it might be a bit too sophisticated for its own good. It works superbly with two victims, but if there are more—within 20 meters—odds are it will ask you to stop while it sorts things out, slowing down the overall search. It has an intuitive user interface, and special functions for overcoming the confusion with too many signals.
Ortovox's S1 is the most sophisticated avalanche transceiver currently available on the market. It has better signal separation than any other transceiver, and can show you on a grid where multiple victims are relative to your position.
