Ortovox S1 Review
March 17, 2012GEAR INSTITUTE RATINGS
The Good
- Recognizes multiple victims.
- Superb marking.
- Grid-like visual display.
- Easy to use.
- Long range.
- Semi-customizable.
The Bad
- Gets confused w/more than 2 signals—slows searching.
- Expensive.
THE VERDICT
While Ortovox's S1 is arguably the most sophisticated avalanche transceiver available, with a solid 48 meters of range and the best marking function of any beacon around, it might be a bit too sophisticated for its own good. It works superbly with two victims, but if there are more—within 20 meters—odds are it will ask you to stop while it sorts things out, slowing down the overall search. It has an intuitive user interface, and special functions for overcoming the confusion with too many signals.
