Meet Dan Nelson, our new Deputy Editor

We’re proud to announce that veteran outdoor industry journalist Dan Nelson has joined the Gear Institute team as Deputy Editor. Nelson will assist Gear Institute Editor-in-Chief and Co-Founder Justin Nyberg in coordinating GearInstitute.com’s growing team of expert gear testers.

“Dan Nelson is one of the most respected and credible journalists in the outdoor industry, and we’re thrilled to have him take a leadership role with our all-star team,” Nyberg said. “His wealth of knowledge, well-earned reputation, and focus on quality content will play a key role in maintaining the integrity of our expert gear tests as we continue our growth.”

Nelson began working as an outdoor industry journalist in 1991 as editor of Northwest Trails magazine, where he would spend up to 159 nights per year in a tent while ‘conducting research’ in the wilderness. Over the past 23 years, Nelson has written for Men’s Journal, Backpacker, Outside, National Geographic Adventure, USA Today, CNN, The Seattle Times, Outdoor Retailer, Elevation Outdoors, and other publications. He has attended 40 Outdoor Retailer shows, authored a dozen guidebooks, and began working with the Gear Institute as a fly fishing rod and reel test director in 2012.

“The Gear Institute is the source for quality independent reviews in the Outdoor Industry. The team of testers employed by the Gear Institute—the depth of expertise in the individuals, and the breadth of fields they cover—is unmatched in the industry,” Nelson said. “I’ve worked with a lot of publications, and this is the dream job. It’s like being the coach of the Olympic team—you get to work with the best of the best.”

The Gear Institute is a network of more than 50 expert gear testers who conduct objective head-to-head field tests of comparable outdoor products and present the results to gear buyers in browsable, long-form test reports. The site maintains a strict separation of editorial and advertising interests to protect the objectivity of its reports.

“The gear review landscape is definitely digital. The need for good independent review of product is vital for getting quality, unbiased information about product to consumers who want to make smart, informed purchases,” Nelson said. “The Gear Institute serves that need better than anyone else.”

The Gear Institute (GearInstitute.com) was founded in 2011 by Peter Kray, Justin Nyberg, Talee Roberts, and Ken Marold.
