Stronger feet for barefoot runners

One way to convert to more minimalist footwear: Just buy slightly more minimal shoes. If you start with low mileage and slowly ease into the new shoes (alternating them with your traditional running shoes), your feet will slowly adjust to the new feeling. Runners can also do foot exercises to strengthen their feet, and reduce their odds of getting hurt.
