Spot’s satellite-supported devices already makes it easy to keep in contact with your people no matter how deep you delve into the backcountry, but their new Trace ($99) helps you keep an eye on your stuff when it’s nowhere near you.
This 2-by-2.7-inch device can be stowed pretty much anywhere (cars, snowmobiles, boats, motorcycles, in a backpack), and then tracked on Goggle Maps with your phone, tablet, or desktop. If the Trace moves, you get pinged via text or email alerts that can be set at discrete intervals. It runs on eight AAA lithium batteries that they say will last up to 18 months, and is waterproof down to a meter for up to 30 minutes. —Nathan Borchelt
