Patagonia Gets Down Right

Patagonia Gets Down Right

Next fall Patagonia will become the first outdoor manufacturer to boast 100-percent traceable down. The company says it took six years to develop this program, which encompasses everything in the sourcing of down goose feathers—from auditing the farm where the goose eggs are laid to following the feathers to the garment factory. The company doesn’t just trust supplier affidavits disclosing where the down comes from, but rather works with an independent, third-party traceability expert for credible info. The end result? Starting in fall 2014, all of the feathers in Patagonia’s down insulation garments will be sourced from geese that have not been force-fed for foie gras production or live-plucked. In a world where company identities are as increasingly valued as the products themselves, Patagonia continues to set the bar.—Nathan Borchelt
