New App Looks to Take the Drudgery Out of Planning a Camping Trip

Coordinating camping trips with friends can sometimes be more hassle than it’s worth. Figuring out who is bringing what, deciding which campsite you’re staying at, and deciding what you’re going to do once you’re there takes plenty of time, patience, and communication.

Apparently, the developers of a new app called Moonlight have felt those same frustrations. In fact, that might be exactly what inspired them to create the app in the first place.

Moonlight’s intent is to alleviate the hassles of pulling together your crew, your gear, your food, and your camping itinerary. Currently available only for iOS (sorry Android fans!), the app serves as a place to organize, plan, and coordinate your camp outing, making it easier than ever to get everyone on the same page.

With a clean, list-driven interface, Moonlight is simple to use. It allows multiple people to login and start collaborating immediately. You and your friends can discuss where to go, decide who’s bringing what, and plan out a full menu of meals for the duration of the trip. Members of the group can even be assigned tasks, as well as things to bring, ensuring you don’t show up on Friday afternoon with five table-top grills and nary a six pack in sight.

Moonlight has an array of in-app content including activity ideas, shopping lists, menus, categorized gear lists, and a compendium of helpful tips and articles on camping. It also has the ability to import your camping reservation directly from ReserveAmerica.com, making it a one-stop shop for your camping needs.

The basic Moonlight functionality is free, although users can choose to upgrade to a premium service plan for $5.99 per year. That service not only removes ads from the app itself, but provides access to camping recipes and an extended database of activities to do near your campsite.

The app is part of the Active.com network and is available for iPads and iPhones on the App Store. There is no word yet on whether or not an Android version will be forthcoming.
