September 16, 2015The Good
- Loves groomers
- Arcs on steep hardpack
- Excellent at medium radius turns
- Better at higher speeds
- Excellent carver
- Great grip
The Bad
- Not very playful
- Not as versatile as other skis in this category
- Very little room for error
The RTM 84 is a carver's dream ski with a penchant for speed and crisp medium radius turns. Although not as versatile as some of the other skis in this category, it's an excellent pick for frontside skiers, high level instructors, race coaches, and former racers who love to crank clean turns.
Volkl’s RTM scored “Excellent” votes among the majority of testers who put it through the paces on the hardpack and also in some light crud and moguls, as well as a couple “Favorite” votes from some of the East Coast skiers who join us in Snowbird for the Ski Test each year. The grip, power, incredible handling abilities at high speeds, and precise turn capability (especially in medium radius turns) resulted in one of the higher scores for Frontside Skis.
Bumps, anything off-piste, and an overall lack of “liveliness” underfoot were rated a drawback for some testers, while the RTM’s “lack of forgiveness” translates as meaning this is NOT an intermediate ski. Consider it one of the top picks for Frontside Performance in our test this year.
