THE VERDICT

The Merrell Bare Access Ultra presents a well-constructed combination of barefoot mechanics and durable, high-performance comfort. The Ultra’s protective features make this one of the most attractive shoes of the fall for natural runners.

FULL REVIEW

A lightweight, flexible, low profile zero-drop road running shoe built for barefoot-inclined runners who want moderate cushioning and protection for long distances. Think of it as the road sibling to Merrell’s Bare Access Trail released earlier this year.

Security (of fit)
The Merrell Bare Access Ultra features a locked-in fit from the heel to forefoot, with classic laces to customize tension as you need it. Synthetic overlays keep the midfoot secure and connected to the heel area. Merrell’s last is typically narrow in the midfoot area before widening in the toe box area.

Stability (on impact)
A Vibram rubber outsole provides very strong grip on asphalt or track surfaces, and the tread is aggressive enough to handle excursions onto mild or moderate trails. The outsole shows minimal sign of wear after about 100 miles of road and trail use in our testing.

Smoothness (flexibility)
The 12mm of Merrell’s M-Bound midsole provides sustained cushioning over long distances, with good responsiveness after impact. Flexibility is outstanding throughout the shoe, allowing full natural movement of your foot through the stance phase.

Comfort
The Merrell Bare Access Ultra’s upper breathes and ventilates efficiently, and the roomy toe box prevents any chafing or hot spots during multi-hour runs. Light padding around the ankle collar improves fit and comfort as well.

Speed and agility
The responsive midsole material and low, flat platform improve your foot reaction time for enhanced speed and agility. Lightweight construction, secure fit, and strong stability also contribute to your ability to run fast.
