The Good

  • Comfortable, breathable harness for hanging and climbing

The Bad

  • Small gear loops limit its functionality
THE VERDICT

The Black Diamond Momentum 3S is designed as an entry-level harness that can do it all and its price and favorable features make it a great value for price conscious climbers. The Momentum’s speed buckles ensured a super snug fit and great adjustability to get the harness just right. While considered above average for comfort it still lags just behind the most comfortable harness tested, the Edelrid Orion.

ITEM DESCRIPTION

The Black Diamond Momentum 3S is a harness designed for sport climbing with three easy to adjust speed buckles.

FULL REVIEW

Comfort
The Black Diamond Momentum 3S drew nice reviews from testers for its comfort while climbing and while hanging at belays and working routes. Black Diamond uses a Dual Core construction that features two thin pieces of nylon with a perforated, foam core between them to offer a wide, comfortable waist belt while allowing great breathability. The Momentum’s speed buckles ensured a super snug fit and great adjustability to get the harness just right. While considered above average for comfort it still lags just behind the most comfortable harnesses tested, such as the Edelrid Orion.

Adjustability/Smooth Buckles
The Momentum 3S is adjusted with three speed buckles that are easy to use and quickly adjusted, allowing for a personalized, snug fit. Testers found the buckles easy to adjust when putting on although then can be somewhat difficult to undo once snugged.

Leg Loops
Wide, comfortable padding graces the leg loops of the Momentum and testers found the leg loops to be comfortable for climbing and hanging. Speed buckles were appreciated by most testers and allow the Momentum to be more versatile according to the season or amount of clothing worn.

Gear Loops
The Momentum has four contoured, protruding gear loops that are easy to clip and find. The gear loops are on the smaller side and most testers found the Momentum to be lacking for anything more than sport climbing. Trad climbers looking to carry gear on their harness, particularly for long routes, may find the space on the Momentum’s gear loops to be lacking.

Weight
At 13 ounces, the Momentum 3S was one of the lightest harnesses tested, weighing exactly the same as the Petzl Sama.

Other Features
The Momentum has a nice, easy to clip, high strength haul loop on the back of the harness. Traditional and big wall climbers looking for a harness that can appropriately carry a tag line or other equipment will appreciate the Momentum’s haul loop. Otherwise, the Momentum lacks other features found on some harnesses, such as ice clippers.

Value
At $59.95, the Momentum was the cheapest harness tested and thanks to its favorable features was widely concerned a great value among testers.
