Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 Review
August 22, 2016The Good
- Snappy & responsive
- Boost midsole is durable
- Outsole excels in any terrain
- Supportive yet offers good flexibility
The Bad
- Sizes large
- Upper quickly shows signs of wear
- Bulky feel
It’s hard to match the comfort and responsiveness that Adidas’ Boost midsole provides, which is why The Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 is a top choice among all our testers. The Sequence 9 stands out from most stability shoes by providing excellent support without the typical stiff and rigid feel. Furthermore, retailing at $130, the Sequence 9 wins best value among stability trainers. However it is the poor fit and upper, which quickly shows signs of wear, that kept the Sequence 9 from winning Best In Class among all comfort shoes tested.
The Supernova Sequence 9 is Adidas’ premium stability trainer offering superb cushioning and excellent energy return. The Sequence 9 has a full length EVA STABLEFRAME, which offers plenty of support without feeling overly stiff. The midsole is made of Adidas’ famous boost technology, which gives unmatched energy returning properties. A TORSION® System under the arch supports the foot as it transitions from heel to toe. The engineered mesh upper allows your feet to feel cool and airy while side overlays gives a touch of added support. The Sequence 9 allows you to feel confident you can perform in any terrain, including the wettest of surfaces with a Continental rubber outsole.
Comfort
The Sequence 9 offers Adidas’ Boost midsole, which is one of the most comfortable and durable midsoles on the market. Boost offers the perfect blend of cushioning and support. The upper has a decent amount of structure due to the abundant use of overlays, however, it really cuts down on comfort. It seems rather stiff and is difficult to get a secure cohesive fit.
Fit
All of our testers felt the Sequence 9 fit on the larger side with one tester suggesting she would have liked to size down a ½ size smaller. The heel collar has an odd shape where the sides dip down low to avoid irritating contact with the ankle bone while around the Achilles it sits very high. The tongue, which has ample padding, is extremely pronounced and sits well above the last eyelet.
Responsiveness
The Sequence 9 is different than most stability shoes in that it offers excellent support from the EVA STABLEFRAME but still has a good amount of flexibly to help during toe-off. The boost midsole seems to snap back after it strikes the ground. It’s easy to notice the energy returning power of boost by simply bending the forefront over the top and letting it go.
Speed
Even though the Sequence 9 offers a nice snappy feel, it’s not an overly fast shoe. Some testers noted it felt bulky, which makes sense since it boasts the highest heel height of any shoe tested, including the Hoka One Clifton 3’s.
Ride Quality
Expect a smooth ride run after run in the Sequence 9. Adidas’s boost technology is one of the smoothest and most responsive midsoles on the market today.
