A Tent With a View: Meet Yakima’s New Roof Top Option

Having a super sick view of nature from your tent is often the unexpected gravy on any camping trip. And come next spring, you could discover a host of great new views thanks to the SkyRise roof top tent series from Yakima, which is scheduled for release in 2017.

Roof top tents (RTT) are gaining in popularity in the U.S. due to the ease of setting them up, the comfort they provide, and the sublime views that campers are rewarded with once they’re in place, although they’ve long been lauded by overlanders for their ability to get you off the ground away from critters and moisture. Car campers who dislike the process of putting up tents and looking for level ground but enjoy the “tent” experience will find the SkyRise to be an excellent solution.

SkyRise is light weight compared to other RTTs in its class (up to 50 pounds lighter than traditional canvas RTTs, according to Yakima) and is made from fire-resistant Ripstop 210D nylon. Star gazers will appreciate the large mesh roof ventilation panel as well.

Other features include:

  • A built-in 2.5-inch high density foam mattress with waterproof bottom
  • Durable, waterproof 210D nylon fly PU coating
  • Universal crossbar compatibility for nearly any vehicle

Yakima says its expertise with vehicle-specific fit data ensures a safe experience for RTT newbies, and the SkyRise does not require tools to install (the tent secures with Yakima’s SKS locking systems). Finally, the SkyRise takes mere minutes to install and folds down into a low-profile unit that stays attached to the base rack when not in use.

The SkyRise is also useful for campers who get to their destinations later than expected. Many times, my friends and I have arrived to a 14er trailhead around midnight, too exhausted to set up tents and end up sleeping in the car (not recommended if you’re going to tackle a mountain on a few hours’ worth of sleep). This RTT promises to reduce the time and hassle in setting up a traditional ground tent.

When it ships to authorized dealers this spring, the SkyRise will come in two sizes, Medium and Small. Here are the dimensions for both models:

SkyRise Medium

  • Dimensions: 56” x 96” x 48” H (expanded); 56” x 48” x 12” (folded)
  • Weight: 90 lbs.
  • Sleeps 3 adults
  • MSRP: $1349

SkyRise Small

  • Dimensions: 48” x 84” x 42” H (expanded); 48” x 42” x 12” (folded)
  • Weight: 75 lbs.
  • Sleeps 2 adults
  • MSRP $999

Perfect for outdoor festivals or tailgating before a sporting event, the SkyRise takes camping to a new level — literally.
